In addition to bringing enjoyment to a legion of local residents and visitors each summer, Summer Concert Series gives back to the community in ways both humanitarian and cultural. In lieu of admission, attendees are asked to bring a can of food in support of the Frederick Food Bank. Last year, many items were collected and distributed to local residents in need. Non-perishable items such as canned meats and vegetables, soups, peanut butter, ceral, rice and pastas are preferred. Cash donations are also accepted.
Equally important is the perpetuation of music among young people in Frederick County. In 1993, the SCS committee established the "Music For All Students Fund" (MFAS Fund) to help ensure the availability of musical instruments and sheet music for economically disadvantaged public school students. Each week, representatives from Frederick County band booster club collect monetary donations. Collected funds are divided between the participating band booster organization and the MFAS Fund which is overseen by the Community Foundation of Frederick County.
The Summer Concert Series committee thanks all concert attendees who support these worthwhile efforts.
